A big thank you to everyone who came along to the pv of TerraMater Art exhibition, Liminal @tremenheeresculpturegardens on Weds evening. Such a lovely buzz!

I am here today looking after the show. Please come for a look and a chat. Tremenheere Gallery is a fabulous oak frame building, there’s a great café and the sculpture garden itself is stunning, set in a valley with views of St Michael’s Mount.

Pictured here, one corner of the space with three of my collages beautifully framed by @theframerkernow in conversation with some painted and carved sticks, a ceramic piece and an ink drawing in the foreground.

OMG it’s a polar bear and some birds and a cheeky rascal and some tawny owls and some zebras lying down and many, many butterflies, some looking like snakes and a lion and some actual snakes and some dogs and one of those small tigery cat like things and a lapdog and an incredible bird headdress and more butterflies looking like snakes and a lovely soft red fox you can stroke- if there were a few they’d be called a skulk - and so many more preserved creatures…

It felt good that at the end of an emotional day r

It felt good that at the end of an emotional day reflecting on motherhood and creative lives that my son Archie came to pick me up from Sally and Ali Nash’s house. It was a brief, but warm exchange: Arch loved their house and immediately fell into conversation with Ali about the technicalities of digging holes in small spaces.

Over the next couple of days, while Archie was working on an HS2 site near Aylesbury, I visited The Natural History Museum at Tring - literally stuffed full of preserved creatures from the tinniest flea to a giant sloth (more of that in another post) - and the Museum of Buckinghamshire where I learnt that much of the county was once underwater. On display were a collection of Amonites and other ancient fossilised watery lifeforms. In a weird moment of synchronous connectivity Archie posted an exclamatory pic of an Amonite found on site in our family group chat, “Look at this bad boy!”

There are many lovely things in the Museum of Buckinghamshire including a space dedicated to contemporary art, some fine embroidery, a wonderful example of Chinese hand painted wallpaper, fascinating oral histories from local people, and an exhibition about the Saxons inspired by a burial ground discovered during HS2 excavations. There is of course a collection of clay objects and pots, ancient and more contemporary. The vitrine with 20th century ware had a nice example of Margaret Hine’s husband’s work: a William Newland platter decorated with the skeleton of a fish. Margaret herself was not in evidence…

The images in this post are a selection of preserved sea life from both the Natural History Museum at Tring and the Museum of Buckinghamshire with the William Newland platter and the pic of the Amonite from Archie’s work place spliced in.

What a tremendous day spent chatting with Sally Na

What a tremendous day spent chatting with Sally Nash about the life and work of her mother Margaret Hine, Mid Century Ceramic artist (1927 - 1987).

Margaret started her creative journey at Derby Junior Art Department aged 11 - she’d wanted to go there since she was 5. Amazing to think that there were specialist art schools at secondary level in the 1960s! Margaret went on to study ceramics at Central School of Art where she met and later married ceramic artist, Bill Newland. They established a studio together in London and later at their home in Prestwood nr Gt.Missenden where they worked independently and collaboratively on figurative work, tile panels and low reliefs for coffee shops and restaurants in London. Margaret is perhaps best know for her beautiful birds, but it was great to see a wide range of pieces recorded in Sally’s archive: lions, horses and fish; sculpture, huge dishes, tiles, all decorated with a confident and beautifully expressive range of marks.

Sally talked about how her Mum’s creativity was lived out in her domestic life as a mother, a cook, a homemaker, in her fashion sense and her love of travel and exploration. Always welcome in the studio, Sally seemed to have been happily immersed as a child in this rich creative world that her parents had made together. (Image 9 shows a wickedly staged shot of Margaret hanging an exhibition with Sally in her carry cot!)

Sally and her partner, Ali’s home feels like a continuation of this creative energy, full of ceramics, wood carvings and sculptures with a bountiful garden, marvellous sheds and an owl house where two owlets were born just last year.

A massive thank you to Natasha Mayo from Cardiff Metropolitan University for inviting me talk to Sally as part of her oral history podcast series, Flightlines: Women’s lives lived through clay. I believe she will be presenting this episode at the Indian Ceramic Art Foundation (ICAF) conference in December this year. A huge thank you to Sally and Ali who made us so welcome in their beautiful home and to Andy for all the driving and the tech.

These pieces are on show as part of Resisters - Women, Craftivism, Art and Fashion, an exhibition @fostergandey Gallery in Lostwithiel opening this evening, Fri 11th Sept, 5-8pm. All welcome!

The title of the show has got me thinking about the idea that making things with your hands from materials that already exist or are from the earth, like clay can be an act of resistance. Especially in contemporary culture where life is so often ultra processed and digitally mediated.

The show features work by several brilliant women makers in a variety of media. At its heart are radical wearable art pieces and reclaimed textiles that challenge fast consumption and prove that making matters.

They’ll be a procession at 6pm for the pv. Apparently we’re all dressing up in amazing outfits made by gallery owner and textile artist, Elaine and craftivists @make_a_mends . At least I think that’s what’s happening?! Come along and find out!

The exhibition is part of Lost in Art, Annual Festival of Arts based in Lostwithiel, Cornwall.

New collection for Liminal!

I am working on a new collection of ceramic pieces for an exhibition starting on 23 September at Tremenheere Sculpture Garden. The new work adds to my ongoing exploration of animal/human/landscape interminglings.

An archipelago of ceramic islands is emerging, holding land, grass, trees, mountains, clouds, some have animal/human inhabitants, some don’t. Things held within the bounds of these islands are familiar, but not necessarily quite as they seem. The word liminal makes me think of spaces, times and places where definition is lost, where the angle of light or the blending of edges and matter enables new forms or feelings to emerge.

Trio of Sheep
Handmodelled Terracotta painted with slips and oxides.
Each measures approximately 14cm long x 12cm high x 7cm wide.

Long Nosed Sheep, Blue Curly Lamb and Blue Banded Lamb have returned from their jaunt to Wales. They would like to stay together, but can bear to be parted if just one of them is all you need to add to your flock.

You can find them as a group on my website - see the new link tree in my bio. If you would like just one, please message me.

This little gang was made using a new modelling technique I learnt amongst many other useful things, in a brilliant masterclass by @susanhallsceramics Susan was a finalist in the Loewe Craft Prize this year. She lives and works in Cornwall making fabulous horses, pigs, hares, rabbits and famously sulky cats some of which can currently be seen @among_the_pines_gallery
