Back in Nov 2025, a friend, working for a few weeks in Chile, sent me a photo of a Precolombian Moche dog made in 100-800 AD seen in The Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art in Santiago. I think I can say quite confidently I will never go to Chile, but this digital image conveyed in an instant from the one side of the world to the other, revived an interest in these incredible, ancient ceramic objects, and got me thinking about scale, surface, symbolism and the unknowable. From Dec through Jan this dog and its garden arrived bit by bit in the studio, tongue out, eyes wide, ears pricked, tail curled, ready for action if only those cacti weren’t so much in the way.
