Women of Cornwall is a project by @_katiebunnell_ and @artcentrepenryn to create 50 handmade porcelain plates featuring women of Cornwall

A big thank you to Jessica Parr for asking me back A big thank you to Jessica Parr for asking me back as her guest on Maid in Kernow, her radio show for @the_source_fm , Falmouth’s community radio station. I chose an all women playlist featuring musicians, Ley Adewole and the Falmouth Community Gospel Choir, Angeline Morrison, Brenda Wootton and poet, Penelope Shuttle, 4 of the 50 Women selected to feature on a plate. We talked about the incredibly tricky selection process, some of the women selected - too many mention them all on air - and the next steps to secure funding to make the plates.

Tune into Source FM 96.1 at 6pm on Sat 30th to hear us chatting!

It was really great to be in Source FM’s new studio in Kimberley Park, Falmouth, and have a coffee in the new Lodge Café afterwards.

VIOLETTA THURSTAN
Nurse, interpreter, weaver, writer
1879 - 1978

Suggested by Maggi Livingstone

“After training as a nurse in London, Violetta joined the Red Cross in 1913, to lead a group of nurses behind enemy lines in Belgium. Here, she was awarded her first medal for bravery. After setting up hospitals in Denmark and Russia, she received a medal from the Russians. Her first memoir, Field Hospital, Flying Column, about her experiences in Russia, was written on sick leave. On her return to the front, she fought for resources and new hospitals – the subject of a 2nd memoir. Violetta remained in Europe until the end of WW1 and was awarded five medals in all for bravery. At the end of the war, she worked with the Red Cross to repatriate and house refugees - subject of a 3rd memoir. After WWI she used her linguistic skills to travel with the Bedouin nomads and learn about weaving and dyes. In WWII she worked as an interpreter.

Moving to Cornwall in her 70’s, she became chair of the Embroiderers’ Guild, taught crafts and wrote books. She was involved in setting up Cornwall Crafts Association and age 94 was made a fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsmen. One of her rugs is in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.

TAMSIN WILTON
The UK’s first Professor of Human Sexuality
1952 – 2006

Suggested by Sophie Meyer

Sophie writes: “Tamsin Wilton, born and raised in Redruth, was a lesbian activist and became the UK’s first Professor of Human Sexuality.

Tamsin’s ability to take complex academic theories and disseminate them to the wider LGBT community in an accessible, often humorous way, made her work uniquely impactful. This was especially important during the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s-90s, as accurate information about the pandemic was hard to come by. For example, the historic London bookshop “Gay’s the Word” was raided by police for stocking AIDS pamphlets from America, as they were considered obscene material. By sharing up-to-date medical and social information, Tamsin made a significant contribution to deconstructing the prejudice surrounding HIV/AIDS.

STELLA TURK
Co-founder of the Cornish Biological Record Unit, later incorporated into the Cornwall Wildlife Trust
1925 - 2017

Suggested by John Macadam

Stella and her husband, Dr. Frank Turk, founded the Cornish Biological Records Unit (CBRU) at the University of Exeter’s Institute of Cornish Studies, later incorporated into the Cornwall Wildlife Trust. An official National Recorder for Marine Molluscs and Strandings Recorder for CRBU, Stella was particularly interested in marine life. She received the Stamford Raffles Award of the Zoological Society of London in 1979, an honorary MSc from Exeter University in 1980, and an MBE in 2003.

John writes, “Stella had a major input into the Red Data Book for Cornwall and wrote a column for the ‘West Briton’. After her husband died it is said that her contributions were rather better recognised. It is fitting that a new building on Exeter University’s Penryn Campus is named the ‘Stella Turk Building’ and is shared by geologists and ecologists. Stella is dead, after a long life well-lived, so I cannot ask her permission to submit this. She was very quiet and modest, but I think she’d be chuffed!”

ROSE HILTON
Artist
1931 – 2019

Suggested by Helen Beard

Helen writes, “Rose Hilton was a painter with a unique and sensitive style. I love her work and that she found her artist’s voice after her husband Roger Hilton, passed away, growing in confidence after that to become the recognised artist she is today.”

From the The Hypatia Trust’s Women in Cornwall archive: “Rose Hilton attended the Royal College of Art, London where she excelled at draughtsmanship and mixed with the likes of Frank Auerbach, Peter Blake, and Bridget Riley. A few years after graduating, she met and fell for the artist Roger Hilton, an imposing talent but notoriously difficult character who asserted that there was only room for one artist in their relationship. As a result, Rose Hilton painted only very infrequently during their marriage, and devoted herself to being a wife and mother.

In 1965 the couple and their young family moved to a cottage in west Cornwall. Rose picked up her brushes again after Roger’s death in 1975 and in 1977 had her first solo show at Newlyn Art Gallery. From 1989 she began showing regularly with Messum’s gallery in London and was recognised with a retrospective show at Tate St Ives in 2008.”

MARY KELYNACK
Walked from Cornwall to London in 1851 to see the Great Exhibition, aged 75
1776 - 1855

Suggested by Matt Thompson

Mary Kelynack was a fish hawker, an occupation requiring both strength and stamina, carrying, as they did, a large “cowel”, or back-basket, of wicker-work filled with fish and supported by a band passing back from the forehead.

Excited by the wealth of industrial innovation on show in the Great Exhibition of 1851, Mary walked all the way from Newlyn to London on foot at the age of 75. The journey took five weeks and attracted much attention. A celebrity by the time she arrived, she met with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

MARY MCWILLIAMS
First black councillor in Cornwall

Suggested by Carol McWilliams

Mary McWilliams was the first black councillor in Cornwall elected in 2011 to Redruth Town Council.

Carol writes, “Mary’s community spirit and action is well known in Redruth where she is a leading member of the local Catholic Church and volunteers with the St Vincent and St Paul charity. Her five children were brought up in Redruth where she worked as a classroom assistant at Curnow School.

No one can really imagine the mountains she had to climb, moving to Cornwall in 1976 with two small non-English speaking Ugandan children. She overcame a hostile extended family and environment by embedding herself into the community. She is a trailblazer for black excellence and community cohesion.

On being elected she said, “I am honoured and thrilled to be the first black woman elected. I hope I can repay the trust local voters have given me by listening to their concerns and working hard for them.” In addition, she said, “as a keen member of the local allotment group I will support any initiatives that promote healthy living in the town.”

JOYTE BROWN
Co-founder Black Voices Cornwall

Suggested by Mandie Sutton

Joyte Brown is co-founder of Black Voices Cornwall where she leads on communities and partnership and advocates for women, diverse communities and people in need.

Black Voices Cornwall was founded in 2020 by a group of optimistic professionals who decided to be the change they wanted to see in their hometowns. Moved by local outcry around Black Lives Matter, they decided to take action to improve lives of local people experiencing isolation, prejudice or discrimination because of their ethnicity.

Today, the organisation delivers positive, fair and meaningful solutions in rural communities, empowering local authorities and organisations to be more inclusive, celebrating diverse cultures, building communities and driving equality for one and all.

Their mission is to provide practical and lasting support for the Duchy to be anti-racist; unlocking Cornwall’s full potential as leaders in social change and innovation and fulfilling the promise of Onen Hag Oll.

MADAME HAWKE
Knitwear entrepreneur
Early 20th Century

Suggested by Alissa Kindred

Madame Hawke was a pioneer of the Knitting Industry in Newquay. A widow with six children she bought a knitting machine and opened a shop in Regent House, Newquay  - now Costa Coffee - selling knitted apparel and later supplying Debenhams. She had a knitting factory on Crantock Street where she employed 450 people.

@lissliveson

Joanna Clare on the Newquay Nostalgia Facebook page has started a thread asking others for information and photos about Madame Hawke, her great, great grandmother and posted this photo of her from c1930 taken from a book called “Images of England: Newquay” by Joyce Greenham and Sheila Harper, published by The History Press in 1999, with the accompanying caption:

“This lady can take credit for establishing the knitwear industry in Newquay. In 1905 upon purchasing a knitting machine she opened a shop selling knitted hats, suits and coats, eventually supplying Debenhams of London. This London connection led to other factories opening including one in Crantock St employing 450 staff. During its heyday the industry provided much needed employment for hundreds of girls. All of this down to one lady and a knitting machine.”

1914 - 2008

Suggested by Manice Stabbins

They designed, built and sold no-nonsense farming machinery which was robust, reliable and performance focused, enabling farming to be as efficient as possible.

The iconic red and yellow machines have been integral not only to Cornish farming but to the worldwide farming community. JANET ISAAC
Gypsy Queen of Cornwall
1870 – 1974

Suggested by Helen Thomas

Helen writes, “Janet Isaac was a prominent and respected elder in the Romani community, and described as the last gypsy queen of Cornwall.”

Elizabeth Dale has written about Janet on her blog, The Cornish Bird. Her piece, partly based on oral interviews with Janet’s great grandson, Tom, is a fascinating read shining a light on the Romani community in Cornwall.

From Elizabeth’s blog, “Janet was born in Helston. She and her husband, Joseph, may have had as many as seventeen children. With many to support and unable to work in the traditional sense as he was blind, Joseph made paper flowers, clothes pegs and wooden sculptures for the family to sell. Janet made lace, a delicate and highly skilled profession, and went door to door selling it by the yard, as well as the other wares the family produced. For a few extra pennies Janet was also known to tell the fortunes of the housewives that she called upon on her rounds.”

EVANGELINE JOYCE COOPER
Champion of swimming
1928 - 2020

Suggested by Hannah May

Evangeline Cooper, known as Joyce, was a fiercely proud Cornish woman and leading figure in Cornish swimming.  A lifelong swimmer til the age of 91, mostly in the sea, she was deeply involved in the sport as a teacher, examiner, coach and official.

Hannah May says, “Gran would have been thrilled to be one of the final 50 ‘Women of Cornwall’, and in the company of such formidable and inspirational figures. She was a proud and everyday Cornish woman at the heart of her family and community: a legacy that still lives on today through us and everyone that knew her. Core to her lifetime role in Cornish swimming was her belief and action toward body positivity, female strength and inclusivity, which she tirelessly championed and impressed upon multiple generations.”

Women of Cornwall selected to feature together on Women of Cornwall selected to feature together on a plate:

KATE PERRY & ALICE MAHONEY
Kate is an artist and Alice is her support worker.

Suggested by Angie Matthew

Angie writes, “Kate Perry is my daughter, born in Truro with Down’s Syndrome and a complete atrioventricular septal heart defect (AVSD), she had open heart surgery at 8 months old and has been a fighter all her life.

Kate is super creative, making artworks in a wide variety of media including drawing, painting, printing making and photography as well as illustrating and self-publishing books, singing and song writing, film making and costume design.

Kate has been able to fulfil her creative ambition because of the amazing and talented support workers who empower and encourage her imagination. No limitations. This is why I am proposing both Kate and Alice together.
