Home New Work for Grays Wharf Opening

New Work for Grays Wharf Opening

Here’s a taste of the fired surfaces of a small new collection of work made for the Grays Wharf opening show – Nov 8th – Dec 22nd 2018. Inspired by traditional Japanese paper stencil designs which are often comprised of a complex arrangement of dots, and dot matrix patterns of early computing, I have used regular dot patterns as a starting point and Adobe Illustrator to layer and disrupt them, developing new dot combinations and introducing a colourful palette.

This work marks a new departure in abstract surface pattern for my work, playing with colour balance and dot arrangements on cylindrical forms. The vessels are cast by hand in a glassy white porcelain body called Parian and the imagery is digitally printed in ceramic glazes which are transferred onto the surface of the form. Each pot is individually decorated using collage techniques and multiple firings to achieve the final result.

@__brickfield__ were in St Austell town centre tod @__brickfield__ were in St Austell town centre today making bricks alongside the big reveal of @sandybrownarts highly contentious Earth Goddess sculpture. The sun shone and the atmosphere was festive inspite of all the negative comments over the past week.

I hadn’t seen the sculpture until today and was pleasantly surprised-perhaps I was preparing to loathe it, while really hoping I wouldn’t. It isn’t loathsome at all. It’s a bonkers festive totem and actually really joyful - and we all need some of that!

I think the scruffy urban backdrop doesn’t do it any real favours, especially what you can see in the first pic, but tidying that up will come next. And a more leafy environment might have been preferable- the planting around the bottom really sets it off - but then it wouldn’t be bringing its charm to the town centre.

One man remarked, “you have to lift your head to see the top”, as if that in itself was problematic. Sad that he felt looking up might be too much effort and he may have had a stiff neck, but it did make me think that getting a long view of it would be good and that is unfortunately not possible in that space.

Spent a blissful couple of hours today cutting, st Spent a blissful couple of hours today cutting, sticking and scribbling. It was all especially relaxed after I fought @tommietridgell off Spotify and glued him down to the page. And here we are kinda melded together for My Jubilee plate design.

Just one more workshop to go and we’ll hit our target of 70 plates.

JAM FIRST?! More fun this week working with ladi JAM FIRST?!

More fun this week working with ladies of the Penryn Women’s Institute designing “My Jubilee” plates! Love this giant scone/cliff top complete with walking boots!

Georgia, a recent graduate from @falmouthuni included Penny Lane in her design - she is a massive Beatles fan. Then it transpired that Betty who had been one of 500 women in the Metropolitan Police in the 1960’s (there were at least 20,000 men) had been on stage with the Beatles holding off the screaming fans … and then Susan, also WI, had been to see the Beatles in Liverpool with her fiancé just after she got engaged…

Only connect…

ps Betty had also guided Marilyn Monroe on a UK visit in her role as WPC and could only relay how lithe and alive Marilyn felt when she touched her dress. Don’t think there’s an emoticon for that?!!!!#

Big thanks to @jessiehigginsoncreative @grayswharfstudios

I have made a couple of new variations in the Pine I have made a couple of new variations in the Pine series that have been stalled mid firing due to issues with my ancient kiln - it is older than me! My trusty in-house technical support, also of a certain age, refused to give up on it and with tenacity and creative thinking got it going again! 🤩

So here are a wide rimmed pasta bowl and a super generous rimmed serving platter. Both fit for any kind of celebratory bank holiday feast!

More details on my website- link in bio.

We’re having a short break from My Jubilee plate We’re having a short break from My Jubilee plate workshops this week while we all get on and celebrate THE Queen. Rumour has it that Megan will be out and about in Penryn over the bank holiday weekend mingling in the throng and seeking out participants for workshops on Weds 8 and Thurs 9 June.

My Jubilee is a National Lottery funded project for residents local to Falmouth and Penryn. Our aim is to work with 70 people to make 70 plates in the Queen’s 70th year of being queen.

Relaxed creative workshops are open to all 70+ local residents and a family member, friend or carer can take part too. No previous experience necessary.

DM me if you or someone you know would like to make their own commemorative plate celebrating their 70+ years.

This project is possible thanks to funding from @tnlcommunityfund

We were so busy today in our My Jubilee workshops We were so busy today in our My Jubilee workshops I only managed to take these 3 pics. They’re definitely a bit special tho’!

Wendy and Val are sisters who have lived in Penryn all their lives. They have 4 other siblings and their Dad died when they were young leaving their Mum to manage 6 kids on her own. Amazingly they all still live in Penryn.

The photo is of them on a day out to Flushing beach lined up against the quay. Wendy and 19 year old helper Tommie shared their experiences of that all important Penryn and Falmouth youth sport: Quay Jumping, just 50 years apart. Yeah it’s a thing quay jumping, for any young person hereabouts.

Val couldn’t come to the workshop, but we created her profile as well as Wendy’s and exchanged them to create a plate for both. The sensitively drawn rendition of the photograph was brilliantly made by Falmouth University Graphic Design graduate, India.

So great to hear other participants’ stories and support them in designing their plates! More pics to follow!

There’s still time to get involved! DM me if you’re interested!

Big thanks again to all our helpers! @grayswharfstudios @graphicdesignfalmouth

A super morning with our first workshop participan A super morning with our first workshop participants in My Jubilee, with older and younger participants working together on plate designs: drawing, tracing, cutting and arranging.

People brought along images of loved ones and things of significance to them to use as inspiration. There was a hubbub of friendly story sharing in the midst of designing and making.

Great work everyone!

Thanks all for taking part and especially to our @falmouthuni student helpers!

All the designs will be printed and fired onto bone china plates by industry experts, Digital Ceramic Systems in Stoke-on-Trent, home of the potteries. The plates will be exhibited in the Grays Wharf Gallery later in the year. Watch this space!

Sometimes the most important posts get stalled in Cfile’s queue and either do not get published or appear much later. One such example is a book and exhibition review of Geert Lap: Specific Objects. Its is exceptional, visually documenting ceramics’ greatest minimalist, who died in 2017, superbly, rationally and beautifully Dutch in its design, with a […]
